Financial Development Program (FDP)

Do you ever wonder how the world’s CEOs got their start? We’ll let you in on a little secret. Ours started out in Cigna’s very own Financial Development Program (FDP) and so can you.

The FDP, one of Cigna’s premier rotation programs, is designed to take early-career MBAs and CPAs and provide them with the knowledge, skills, and training needed to fill key leadership positions across the enterprise. While we provide you with time in the classroom and in various training sessions, we know you have the skills, experiences, and talent to develop meaningful solutions for our customers. That’s why we’ll have you manage projects that help push Cigna further in the health care industry revolution.

With the FDP, there's no limit to the opportunities for you to learn and grow as a leader. Are you up for the challenge?

For experienced hires, applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

If you're a second-year MBA student, applications open up annually in the summer.

After the initial rotation, associates are welcome to relocate to another Cigna office if a role allows.

Who we hire:
Candidates who are working towards or have completed their MBA or CPA designation with 3 - 5 years of experience.

Program timeframe:
5 - 7 years depending on the complexity and length of the 3 - 5 rotations you choose.

Areas of exposure:

As a member of the Financial Development Program, you'll rotate through several areas of the organization and gain exposure to the following:
  • Financial Reporting, Corporate Finance, and Financial Planning and Analysis
  • Financial Strategy, Corporate Development, and Enterprise Strategy 
  • Data & Analytics
  • Underwriting & Healthcare Pricing
  • Provider Contracting & Operations
  • Robotic Process Engineering
  • Accounting / Audit
  • Treasury / Capital Management


Example of rotations available to program participants:

Rotation 1 - Financial Planning & Analysis


In this rotation, you'll identify risks and opportunities by developing a comprehensive package for the annual plan and re-projection process. During off-peak periods, planners work to identify and implement efficiencies as they prepare for the upcoming plan cycle. 

Rotation 2 - Pricing



As a pricing analyst you'll be responsible for analyzing large amounts of data to determine key issues and trends effecting an assigned market or market segment. Based on your analysis, you will determine a course of action and drive the solution to closure.

Rotation 3 - Internal Audit


In this rotation, you'll ensure the effectiveness of the organization’s risk management activities. To accomplish this, you will objectively examine business processes, identify risks or gaps in the control structure, identify root causes, and synthesize those elements into potential business impacts. 

Rotation 4 - Controller


As a controller, you'll ensure the integrity of the financial accounting and reporting processes for a specific market and product. This includes establishing, maintaining, and monitoring the expense management process as well as internal controls, to ensure the existence of a sound financial infrastructure.

Still in the first year of your MBA? Check out our summer internship.
During our 10-week summer internship program, participants are exposed to all aspects of Cigna's finance department as they work on projects crucial to our growth and success. As an intern you could manage a project that ranges from creating an M&A Valuation model to developing a financial strategy or robotic process automation.

While applications typically open up in the early fall, make sure to check with your school's career center for specific application deadlines and potential on-campus interview dates.  If we don’t have any events at your school, make sure to apply online by January. 

Please note our internship roles are based in Hartford, CT, Philadelphia, PA, and Saint Louis, MO.
